Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex
Client: Morgan Sindall Group
Contract Value: Circa £600k
Duration: 40 weeks
Project Description
This project involved specialized groundworks for Block 60 at Broomfield Hospital. The work was part of a major scheme to replace the building’s roof after RAAC was discovered. Our scope included breaking out and reinstating the existing reinforced concrete floor slab to install new pad foundations designed to support the new roof structure.
Alongside the foundation work, we installed a new and intricate below-ground drainage network, which included a specialized section for chemical and nuclear waste. Working inside an existing building required careful coordination with other contractors and a precise approach to navigating the original steel frame.
More about the scheme
- A key feature of the project was the installation of a drainage system using Vulcathene pipework. This material is specifically engineered to handle harsh laboratory chemicals and nuclear waste that would cause standard pipes to fail. The system is designed to withstand heat and chemical damage, ensuring hazardous liquids are safely moved to the hospital’s main drainage network.
- The works were located inside an existing building, which meant working in tight spaces with limited access points. Our teams used compact machinery to break out the concrete floor and install the new foundations and drainage runs around the building’s existing steel superstructure.
- Although Block 60 was primarily used for administration, its location within the hospital grounds meant we had to follow strict rules regarding noise, dust, and vibration. We managed these factors carefully to ensure our groundworks did not disrupt the essential medical services being provided in the surrounding clinical areas.
